We Are Wakefield businesses raise over £4,000 to help heat homes

On the coldest night of 2021 a collection of We Are Wakefield members set about raising vital funds for the Community Foundation Wakefield District’s Challenge 25 appeal.  The money raised would go to families within the Wakefield District who were suffering from Fuel Poverty.

Not everyone is clear what “Fuel Poverty” actually means.  Fuel Poverty Describes A Household That Cannot Afford To Keep Warm Due To Fuel Costs.

Little did we know just a few months ago how relevant this would be today.

The Wakefield Business Collective team were made up of: Jodie Lawton – The Will Way, Samantha Stones – WF Web Design, Antony De Csernatony – Kraft Koffee, Craig Shepherd – The Community Foundation Wakefield District, Claire Sutherley – We Are Wakefield, Mandy Plues – Yorkshire Mental Health First Aid, Andrew Plues – JaJa Photography, Lorna Blackett – Crest Commercial Finance, Jenna Fan – Fanfare Music, Mark Harris – Ipex Technologies.

Jenna kicked off the fundraising by performing a song everyday for 25 days and broadcast live to Facebook viewers.  Antony obtained a signed Tyson Fury boxing glove to give away in a raffle and also arranged a meet and great with the Gypsy King for a sizeable donation to the fund!  The rest of the team decided to brave the cold and see for themselves how it feels not to be able to put on the heating when it’s freezing outside.  They bunked down in a plastering warehouse for the night and the sponsorship rolled in as the snow fell outside!

The team raised a whopping £4084.79 to help families in need on our district.  Great things happen when we work together.  We Are Wakefield.  Are you?

How can Community Foundation help?

What they do:

The Community Foundation Wakefield District is an independent charity, created in 2007 to support local community groups and charities in the Wakefield District.

Their mission:

Wakefield District holds a special place in the charity’s hearts and so their mission is to;

Inspire local giving, support communities and change lives!

How they achieve this…

They rely on the generosity of businesses and individuals who care about where they live and work and who want to ‘give something back’. Wakefield District covers a large geographic area and has much to be proud of, however, there are still major pockets of deprivation and it is in these areas that we target by doing the following:

  • Fundraise, create grants and distribute them to local causes
  • Raise funds annually for Fuel Poverty
  • Donate preloved items to people in need via their charity shop, the Community Give Box, at Trinity Walk
  • Sell new and preloved goods to raise funds at the Community Give Box
  • Celebrate local volunteers through our annual Unsung Heroes Awards

Hundreds of charities and voluntary groups work across the district to address inequalities. Community Foundation invest in these groups and help communities thrive via their grants programme. The fund which is currently open is the HARIBO Happiness Together Fund.

Tagtiv8 are changing the way children learn

Tagtiv8 was created back in 2012. Why? As teachers and school leaders, the team love to learn!

However, they hate sitting down for long periods of time. Sadly, many schools focus only on English and Mathematics – with certain subjects put to one side. In some schools, subjects are taught in boxes – and they believe that this is not how we learn best.

Their mission is simple – to create educational resources and training that develop confidence in key areas of the curriculum through physical activity.

With a background rooted in teaching and school leadership, Tagtiv8 can empathise with teachers and children alike.

They want high academic standards, but not at the expense of physical and emotional wellbeing.

Tagtiv8 is neither Sport or PE, nor is it a scheme of work for Mathematics or English, it is all about moving and learning in all subjects.

FanFare – Choir Goes Pop

Singing in a group is good for wellbeing: feel good hormones are released, bonds and friendships are forged and people leave a session buzzing. Choirs are a popular hobby, memberships are on the increase again post-lockdowns but FanFare want to attract more young singers to choirs.

Choirs Go Pop was established in 2019 under the name West Yorkshire Choirs Pop Festival. The aims of the festival were to raise the profile of choirs, have choirs of all types singing more pop songs for the day and realizing how much fun this could be and attracting younger people to join. Director Jenna Fan set up Go Pop as a community interest company last year and will be restarting the annual festival this June.

The festival will be held at Theatre Royal Wakefield on Sunday 12th June and this time the event has workshops which the public can participate in. The morning will feature three workshops: Musical Theatre delivered by the Theatre Royal’s Performance Academy tutor Alison George; Contemporary Pop delivered by Leeds Conservatoire’s Craig Lees; and Gospel delivered by HUM Gospel Choir. Choirs and members of the public can attend these workshops, tickets available to purchase at gopopcic.co.uk. No singing experience is required to join the workshops.

The afternoon will be spent with the doors closed to the public for a non-competitive X-Factor type event featuring choirs from all over the North of England. A panel of experts will give feedback on the performances with the aim of giving pointers to improve performance for the future.

In the evening a choral extravaganza will take place at the theatre with HUM Gospel Choir headlining a fantastic concert featuring all the participating choirs too. Tickets for this are available from the Theatre Royal Wakefield Box Office.

If you are a member of a choir, or an individual, and would like to find out more about how to get involved with the day or workshops please get in touch: [email protected].
