Singing in a group is good for wellbeing: feel good hormones are released, bonds and friendships are forged and people leave a session buzzing. Choirs are a popular hobby, memberships are on the increase again post-lockdowns but FanFare want to attract more young singers to choirs.
Choirs Go Pop was established in 2019 under the name West Yorkshire Choirs Pop Festival. The aims of the festival were to raise the profile of choirs, have choirs of all types singing more pop songs for the day and realizing how much fun this could be and attracting younger people to join. Director Jenna Fan set up Go Pop as a community interest company last year and will be restarting the annual festival this June.
The festival will be held at Theatre Royal Wakefield on Sunday 12th June and this time the event has workshops which the public can participate in. The morning will feature three workshops: Musical Theatre delivered by the Theatre Royal’s Performance Academy tutor Alison George; Contemporary Pop delivered by Leeds Conservatoire’s Craig Lees; and Gospel delivered by HUM Gospel Choir. Choirs and members of the public can attend these workshops, tickets available to purchase at gopopcic.co.uk. No singing experience is required to join the workshops.
The afternoon will be spent with the doors closed to the public for a non-competitive X-Factor type event featuring choirs from all over the North of England. A panel of experts will give feedback on the performances with the aim of giving pointers to improve performance for the future.
In the evening a choral extravaganza will take place at the theatre with HUM Gospel Choir headlining a fantastic concert featuring all the participating choirs too. Tickets for this are available from the Theatre Royal Wakefield Box Office.
If you are a member of a choir, or an individual, and would like to find out more about how to get involved with the day or workshops please get in touch: [email protected].
