Welcome Theatre Royal as our newest members

The Theatre Royal in Wakefield is the only one of it’s kind that’s nestled perfectly in the heart of the city. This mixed house takes in tours of popular shows, produces a musical every year, and a pantomime annually for the festive season.

This theatre is on a mission to develop new creative opportunities and experience within the precincts of the building, and throughout the wider community and on tour, to encourage high-quality engagement within the performing arts industry.

Whether you enjoy music, drama or comedic shows and come along alone or with the family, there really is something to suit everyone’s needs thanks to the vast array of productions that are performed on stage.

Generally, the stage is occupied around 265 days every year, with some of the acts made right within the city. Other shows are hand-picked from the best quality acts that UK has to offer.

Theatre Royal Wakefield really is for everyone, that’s why they are also proud to present work from our local community, amateur societies and groups on our stages. Not only that but they take their productions around the UK too, spreading the Wakefield name far and wide!

If the productions inside aren’t enough for you, the outstanding beauty of the  Victorian theatre building is enough to render anyone intrigued. The building is the design and vision of famous architect Frank Matcham. This Grade II* listed building, built in 1894, is the smallest surviving Matcham theatre auditorium.

Inside, the Matcham Auditorium is a traditional Victorian theatre complete with red velvet seats, curtains and even a couple of Royal boxes! This beautiful and ornate auditorium holds 499 people with the stage being framed by a typical proscenium arch, decorated in gold leaf.
