As unique as the woman who inspired it, The Hepworth Wakefield is an award-winning public art gallery and museum set within Wakefield’s historic waterfront overlooking the River Calder. It sits alongside The Hepworth Wakefield Garden, one of the UK’s largest free public gardens designed by celebrated landscape architect and designer, Tom Stuart-Smith OBE.

Named after Barbara Hepworth, one of the most important artists of the 20th century who was born and brought up in Wakefield, the gallery presents bold and internationally significant exhibitions of the best modern and contemporary art and has dedicated galleries exploring Hepworth’s art and working process.

The Hepworth Wakefield’s acclaimed David Chipperfield Architects designed building is also home to Wakefield’s significant art collection – an impressive compendium of modern British and international contemporary art.

Our mission is to create unforgettable art experiences for all, while inspiring positive change locally. We offer an extensive learning and outreach programme for schools, families and local community groups, alongside a vibrant programme of events including regular fairs and markets.

Since opening in 2011, the gallery has been recognised through many significant awards. Including Art Funds Museum of the Year 2017, the Freelands Award 2019, and the European Garden Award 2024, amongst others. As well as consistently gaining VisitEnglands GOLD visitor attraction accolade.

As a registered charity, The Hepworth Wakefield has a range of opportunities that bring businesses closer to the gallery, whilst simultaneously supports the work we do locally. Including business membership schemes and event spaces for hire.
